Tata Motors has officially reaffirmed its plans to roll out petrol-powered versions of the Harrier and Safari later this financial year. A big shift for both SUVs, which until now have only been available with diesel engines, this update aims to widen Tataโs appeal in the midsize SUV spaceโespecially as demand for petrol options continues to grow.
Petrol Upgrade
At the heart of this new offering will be Tataโs latest 1.5-litre TGDi petrol engine. This turbocharged unit is expected to deliver 168bhp and 280Nm of torqueโoffering a smoother, more refined alternative to the current diesel motors.
Buyers can expect two transmission choices:
- A 6-speed manual gearbox
- A 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT)
This 1.5 TGDi is a part of Tataโs next-gen turbo petrol family, building on the 1.2-litre TGDi engine seen in the Curvv. That smaller engine puts out 118bhp and 170Nm, also paired with both MT and DCT options.
Hereโs how the two engines compare:
Engine | Power | Torque | Gearbox Options |
---|---|---|---|
1.2 TGDi | 118bhp | 170Nm | 6MT / 7DCT |
1.5 TGDi | 168bhp | 280Nm | 6MT / 7DCT (expected) |
First for Harrier and Safari
This will be the first time that both the Harrier and the second-gen Safari are offered with a petrol engine. While the diesel variants have always found favour with long-distance and highway users, the petrol models aim to win over city-focused buyers looking for a quieter and more refined drive.
Tata is likely to price the petrol versions about Rs. 1 lakh lower than their diesel counterparts, depending on the variant and gearboxโmaking them slightly more affordable across the lineup.
Harrier EV Launch
Before the petrol versions arrive, Tata is set to debut the Harrier EV on 3 June. This electric flagship will share its platform with the ICE Harrier but feature EV-specific enhancements.
Hereโs what to expect:
- A 500km claimed range
- Dual-motor all-wheel drive setup
- Same premium feature set as the standard Harrier
This will also be the first Tata to offer dual-motor 4WD, aligning with global EV trends and raising the bar in the premium electric SUV segment.
With both petrol and EV variants coming soon, Tata is clearly expanding its powertrain mix to meet diverse market needs. Diesel, petrol, or electricโthe Harrier and Safari lines are about to get a lot more versatile.
